Successful Nights for Indians, Pioneers, and Wolves (Golf RoundUp)

Monday’s weather conditions were not perfect for golfing, though many area teams were able to execute well enough to pick up victories.

Spirit Lake secured a pair of Lakes Conference triangular wins. The boys golf squad defended their home course, shooting a 160 to get by both Storm Lake (164) and Emmetsburg (170). A four-hole playoff decided meet medalist honors after a three-way tie at 37. The Tornadoes John Bral won the playoff, followed by Spirit Lake’s Scott Hummel and Storm Lake’s Ryan Gutz. But it was a total team effort by the Indians, as they also counted a 40 from Tate Hanson, a 41 by Zach Skopec, and a 42 on the card of Corey Potter.

The Spirit Lake girls won the same triangular in Emmetsburg, collecting a 204 team score to best the hometown E-Hawks (216) and Storm Lake (240). Sisters Whitney and Kelsa Berkland required a playoff to determine the meet medalist after both turned in rounds of 50. The senior, Whitney, would prevail. The other two scores for the Indians were a 51 by Abby Goodenow and a 53 from Amanda Williams.

The Siouxland Conference boys tour made its meet stop at Boyden-Hull on Monday, and the Okoboji Pioneers missed out on their first league victory by six strokes. MOC-Floyd Valley took the team title at 164, with Okoboji in second at 170. Sibley-Ocheyedan, which won the first two meets, struggled to a sixth place finish (178) to allow the Pioneers to leap frog them in the conference standings. James Halbur and Ben DeMuth led the Okoboji scoring with 42’s, followed by a pair of 43’s from Tyler Ohl and Wes Burgeson. Brandon Snyder of West Lyon was the low man on the board with a 38.

The girls of the Siouxland took to the links at West Lyon, and Alex Mankle of Okoboji picked up her third straight medalist honor, shooting a tournament low 37. Teammate Kiley Wermesen was seven strokes back at 44 to finish third. Sheldon made it back-to-back league victories. The Orabs tallied a 192, ahead of second place MOC-Floyd Valley at 198. Okoboji ended the day fourth with a 203, behind Sioux Center (199).

Harris-Lake Park had little trouble taking a pair of dual matches in the Cornbelt Conference against Clay Central-Everly at Silver Lake Country Club. The Wolves won the boys match by a 173-213 score. Nathan Kyle carded a round of 37, followed by three scores of 45 from Tanner Hiveley, Eli Ihnen, and Ryan Gembler.

The Lady Wolves finished 35 shots better than the Mavericks, winning 246-281. Macy Gunderson grabbed medalist honors with a 49. Amanda Hibma was second with a 62, followed by Rachel Vellema with a 67, and Noreen Morrow at 68.
