Monday’s weather conditions were not perfect for golfing, though many area teams were able to execute well enough to pick up victories.
Spirit Lake secured a pair of Lakes Conference triangular wins. The boys golf squad defended their home course, shooting a 160 to get by both Storm Lake (164) and Emmetsburg (170). A four-hole playoff decided meet medalist honors after a three-way tie at 37. The Tornadoes John Bral won the playoff, followed by Spirit Lake’s Scott Hummel and Storm Lake’s Ryan Gutz. But it was a total team effort by the Indians, as they also counted a 40 from Tate Hanson, a 41 by Zach Skopec, and a 42 on the card of Corey Potter.
The Spirit Lake girls won the same triangular in Emmetsburg, collecting a 204 team score to best the hometown E-Hawks (216) and Storm Lake (240). Sisters Whitney and Kelsa Berkland required a playoff to determine the meet medalist after both turned in rounds of 50. The senior, Whitney, would prevail. The other two scores for the Indians were a 51 by Abby Goodenow and a 53 from Amanda Williams.
The Siouxland Conference boys tour made its meet stop at Boyden-Hull on Monday, and the Okoboji Pioneers missed out on their first league victory by six strokes. MOC-Floyd Valley took the team title at 164, with Okoboji in second at 170. Sibley-Ocheyedan, which won the first two meets, struggled to a sixth place finish (178) to allow the Pioneers to leap frog them in the conference standings. The girls of the Siouxland took to the links at West Lyon, and Alex Mankle of Okoboji picked up her third straight medalist honor, shooting a tournament low 37. Teammate Kiley Wermesen was seven strokes back at 44 to finish third. Sheldon made it back-to-back league victories. The Orabs tallied a 192, ahead of second place MOC-Floyd Valley at 198. Okoboji ended the day fourth with a 203, behind Sioux Center (199).
