Indians Own Lakes Girls Meet (Golf RoundUp)




Spirit Lake left no doubt as to who was the best girls golf team in the Lakes Conference this season, winning the conference meet on their home course of Okoboji View by thirteen strokes. The Indians’ 391 team total outpaced Spencer, who placed second at 404. Emmetsburg was third with a 410, followed by LeMars in fourth (422), Estherville-Lincoln Central fifth (436), Storm Lake sixth (440), and Western Christian seventh (450).

A hotly contested Lakes Conference boys’ golf meet at Brooks National ended with four teams within six shots of the top. Storm Lake claimed the title with a 321, followed by Spencer in second at 322. Third-place belonged to Spirit Lake with a 324, Estherville-Lincoln Central shot a 327 to take fourth, followed by Cherokee in fifth (335), Emmetsburg sixth (344), Western Christian seventh (346), and LeMars eighth (348). Corey Potter and Zach Skopec each shot 80’s to place in the top-ten and earn all-conference honors. The Indians also counted Tate Hanson’s 81 and Scott Hummel’s 83. John Bral of Storm Lake carded a 74 as medalist.

After winning two straight Siouxland Conference tour meets, the Okoboji boys’ golf team fell back to the middle of the pack Monday at George-Little Rock, finishing fifth overall. The Pioneers shot a 173 team score, while league front-runner MOC-Floyd Valley won the meet with a 166. Sibley-Ocheyedan took second at 167, beating Rock Valley in a tie-breaker. James Halbur went low for Okoboji, posting a 41 to take fifth overall. Wes Burgeson carded a 43, Tyler Ohl shot a 44, and Mike Luhrs brought in a 45. West Lyon’s Brandon Snyder was the medalist with a 39.

The girls’ tour stop was at Sioux Center, where Sheldon picked up another league win. The Orabs’ 185 was three strokes better than MOC-Floyd Valley (188). Okoboji shot a 205 to claim fifth-place. Alex Mankle and Kiley Wermersen each shot rounds of 44, finishing amidst a log-jam for second-place individually. Tie-breakers put Mankle in third and Wermersen in sixth. Carrie Wahlstrom of Sheldon earned medalist honors with a 43.

In the Cornbelt, Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayshire won a home boys’ dual over West Bend-Mallard, 178-187. Mitch Girres sat atop the leaderboard with a 41. GTRA also counted a pair of 45’s from Kyle Dalen and Ethan Peterson, along with a 47 by Dylan Smith.
