Indians Lose in Extras (Softball RoundUp)




In extra innings, Spirit
Lake lost a heartbreaker
at LeMars, a 3-2 walkoff win for the Bulldogs in Lakes Conference play. Paige
Krause broke a scoreless tie with a solo homer in the fourth inning, before
adding a second RBI in the sixth with a double to make it 2-0 Spirit Lake.
LeMars rallied against Indians starter Cara Vale to tie it in the bottom of the
sixth, and eventually won the game in the eighth on Kennedy Rolfes’ run-scoring
single. The run came off reliever Bailee Newman, who will take the loss. The
win is the seventh straight for the Bulldogs. Spirit Lake
drops to 7-7 overall and 1-4 in league games. They host North
Union on Thursday.

In a battle between the top two teams in the Lakes
Conference, Kendall Bosch struck out nine batters to lead Estherville-Lincoln
Central to a 6-0 blanking of Spencer. The ninth-ranked Midgets remain perfect
in the conference at 4-0, while the Tigers drop to 3-1. ELC will take on Spirit Lake
at home on Friday, and Spencer hosts LeMars this evening.

The Emmetsburg E-Hawks found their stride Wednesday in an
8-0 shutout of Western Christian in a Lakes Conference contest. Emmetsburg
collected ten hits, with Aly Berven driving in a pair of runs on one hit.
Michaela Rehm and Faith Schmidt each enjoyed multi-hit nights. Schmidt also
held the Wolfpack bats in check by throwing a four-hitter with 14 strikeouts in
the circle. At 8-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference, Emmetsburg travels to
Cherokee on Thursday.

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn won a pitcher’s duel in War Eagle
softball Wednesday, defeating Hinton, 3-2. Freshman Krista Orthmann went the
distance in her first varsity start, limiting the Blackhawks to three hits
while striking out seven. Michelle Beving paced the Hawks offense with two
hits, and Kaley Tewes capped the game with a key sacrifice fly to drive in the
winning run. HMS improves to 3-5 on the year and 2-5 in league play. They host
Remsen Union on Friday.

Elsewhere, top-ranked North Union
dominated Laurens-Marathon by a 13-0 final.
