Okoboji Invitational Crowns Three Champions (Softball RoundUp)




The Okoboji Invitational wrapped up with tournament play on
Saturday. The Division Two bracket saw the host Pioneers drop their semifinal
game by a 5-4 margin to Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire. Okoboji then
defeated Clay Central-Everly, 5-4, in the consolation contest. In the
championship, GTRA lost to South O’Brien, 4-3. the Wolverines had previously
beaten the Mavericks in a lopsided, 11-1, game. The Division Three bracket
ended with Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn recording two victories. The Hawks opened
with a 5-1 decision over Sibley-Ocheyedan, and followed with a 16-1 thumping of
Sheldon. The Orabs did go on to beat the Generals, 9-2. And in the Division One
bracket, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley went undefeated with a 7-1 win against Sioux
Central, and a 10-0 blanking of Spalding Catholic. MOC-Floyd Valley
also defeated Spaldling Catholic in a rout, 19-3.

The Spencer Tournament continued Saturday with more of the
state’s top teams squaring off. Spirit
Lake dropped a both
matchups on the day, losing to 15th-ranked Marcus-Meridan-Cleghorn,
10-5, and then to Denison-Schleswig by a 5-3 margin. The Indians went 0-4 in
the tourney. Sixth-ranked Estherville-Lincoln Central enjoyed a highly successful
day. The Midgets handed No. 3 Bishop Heelan its third loss of the season with a
2-1 victory, and later earned a 9-5 decision over top-ranked North
Union. The Warriors also fell to No. 1 and undefeated
Akron-Westfield, 4-2. The host Tigers struggled on day two, falling 8-1 against
Central Lyon/George-Little Rock and 14-1 to fourth-ranked Newell-Fonda.

Park also hosted its
softball tournament on Saturday, with the hometown Wolves going 1-1 on the day.
HLP opened with a 10-1 thrashing of Unity Christian. In the championship game,
the Wolves lost by a single run to Laurens-Marathon, 4-3. The Chargers had
previously beaten Unity Christian, 6-3. At 9-14, HLP will try to make it
double-digit wins on the season when they travel to second-ranked North Union on Monday for a doubleheader.

Meanwhile, Emmetsburg was perfect at the Garner-Hayfield
Tournament on Saturday. The E-Hawks pounded out win of 10-4 over
Clarion-Goldfield, 4-1 against Mason City Newman Catholic, and then 5-0 over
the hosts.
