An offensive third inning that plated seven runs ultimately
led to a 9-4 Spirit Lake baseball victory over Estherville-Lincoln Central in
the Lakes Conference on Wednesday. The Midgets led 3-0 after 2 ½ innings, and
then the Indians sent a dozen batters to the plate and took advantage of six
hits and two walks. Andrew Ites began that rally with a double and capped it
with a two-RBI base hit. The junior went 3-for-3 with four runs driven in and
one more scored. Paul Brown got the win striking out nine batters. Joe
Clayton provided the power for ELC, smashing a two-run home run to left. Tucker
Milburn was 3-for-4 with a run scored, but took the loss on the hill. The
Midgets drop to 4-7 in league play and host Central Lyon
for a non-conference battle on Thursday. Spirit
Lake will take a 9-3 mark in league
games to Storm Lake on Friday.

A game filled with big rallies ended with Emmetsburg coming up
one run shy in an 11-10 loss to Cherokee on Wednesday. The E-Hawks led 5-1
after two innings, however, by the sixth, the Braves had assumed an 11-5
advantage. Emmetsburg plated five in that frame, but left runners stranded in
the seventh. The E-Hawks committed seven errors defensively. Brady Berkland had
three hits and drove in three, while Jake Carlson plated three runs on two
hits. Emmetsburg falls to 4-7 in the Lakes Conference and hosts rival Spencer
on Thursday.
Spencer fell behind early at LeMars and couldn’t quite get
back in the game, losing a 6-1 matchup to the Bulldogs. Colan Borchers struck
out ten Tigers and allowed just three hits. The win guarantees LeMars at least
a share of the conference title for a second consecutive year. Spencer’s
Matthew Klemme took the loss despite nine strikeouts. The Tigers will take a
4-6 conference mark to Emmetsburg on Thursday.
In the War Eagle, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn went looking for a
second straight win, however, Gehlen Catholic held the Hawks at bay and won
13-6 in Hartley on Wednesday. HMS still boasts a 9-6 league record with five
conference games remaining. Thursday they host Spalding Catholic.
Over in the Siouxland, George-Little Rock put a dent in West Lyon’s hopes for a piece of the league title with a 2-1
victory.
