Park opened the Class 1A
Regional playoffs on their home diamond Monday, however, would suffer an 11-5 setback
against Granville Spalding Catholic. The Wolves led
1-0 after two before allowing seven runs over the next two innings. HLP battled
back to within 7-4, but the Spartans put the game out-of-reach with a four-run
sixth. Alex Willman led Spalding Catholic with four hits, three
runs batted in, and three scored. Maggie Schroeder drove in four runs on two
hits, and Madison Pottebaum earned the victory. The Spartans will advance to
play ninth-ranked Remsen St. Mary’s on Thursday. Harris-Lake Park
received a 3-for-3 effort at the plate from Noreen Morrow, who scored three
times. Zayda Elbuytari drove in a pair of runs. Macy Gunderson
struck out five in the loss. The Lady Wolves cap the season with a record of
12-17, two wins better than a season ago.

Prior to that game, Clay Central-Everly’s season closed with
a 10-0 loss in five innings to Trinity Christian in Lake Park.
The Mavericks went 8-17 this season. Trinity Christian will take on two-time
defending state champion and top-ranked Akron-Westfield in the second round.
In the Region 2 bracket, Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire
ended their season with an opening round loss at Algona Bishop Garrigan,
falling 9-5. GTRA trailed five nothing after three innings before getting as
close as 6-5 entering the sixth. The Golden Bears put up three insurance runs
in the seventh, securing the win and moving on to play North Iowa in the second
round. North Iowa topped Belmont-Klemme, 10-9.
Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire finishes the summer with a 14-20 record.
Other playoff scores from Class 1A include, West
Bend-Mallard topping CWL, 12-0 in three innings, with the Wolverines advancing
to face fourth-ranked Newell-Fonda.
