In a battle for positioning in the final Cornbelt Conference
standings, rivals Harris-Lake
Park and
Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire gained and lossed nothing in splitting a
doubleheader Monday. The Wolves won the first game by a 13-3 margin in six innings.
Colin Brons struck out seven en route to the win. Connor Gunderson, Nathan
Kyle, and Tanner Hiveley all had two hits each. The nightcap ended in a 12-5
victory for GTRA. Kyle took the loss for HLP, with Eli Ihnen collected a pair
of hits. The Knights finish at 6-4 in the league and 16-7 overall. They open
the Class 1A Districts against Newell-Fonda next week Tuesday in Storm Lake.
HLP went 7-3 in the Cornbelt and has one final regular season contest left on
Thursday at Emmetsburg.
Spirit
Lake concluded its
baseball regular season on Monday with one final Lakes Conference victory. The
Indians beat Western Christian by a 10-8 final in Spirit Lake,
completing a season sweep of the Wolfpack. Brandon Stoll smashed his third home
run of the season, driving in five total runs on two hits. Cody Poock tallied
three base knocks and Nick Wetzeler had a pair of hits. Paul Brown was the
winning pitching allowing eight runs, though none were earned, as the Indians
committed four errors. Stoll came in to retire one batter and get the save. Spirit Lake
finishes 10-4 and in the second place in the league, while going 17-7 overall.
They are off until July 13, when they play Spencer in LeMars to open the Class
3A Districts.
Elsewhere in the Lakes Conference, Emmetsburg handed Storm Lake
a 9-5 loss. The E-Hawks finish 6-8 in the conference and wrap up the regular
season Thursday with a home game against Harris-Lake Park.
The Spencer Tigers have won three straight following their
4-1 victory over Cherokee on Monday. Matthew Klemme contained the Braves’ bats
in getting the win, with Blake Seier coming in late for the save. At the plate,
Weston Glienke had a 3-for-3 night with two runs scored, and Austin Allen drove
in a pair. Spencer holds a 7-6 conference record and hosts Alta/Aurelia on
Thursday.
Conference champion LeMars closed out their regular season
with a pair of wins over Estherville-Lincoln Central. The eighth-ranked
Bulldogs won by scores of 7-5 and 11-1 in six innings. The Midgets have lost
seven straight and end the regular season at 4-10 in the league and 10-16
overall. ELC opens the Class 2A Districts at rival Emmetsburg on Saturday. That
game can be heard on Y100.
Okoboji dropped a Siouxland Conference game at Sheldon in
shutout fashion, 4-0. The Pioneers sit at 4-9 in conference contest and
continue league play Tuesday at Sioux
Center.
The rest of the Siouxland saw Sibley-Ocheyedan drop a 3-0
contest at George-Little Rock. The Generals take a 3-10 league mark to Sheldon
on Tuesday.
In the War Eagle, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn was shutout by
Hinton, losing 6-0 at home on Monday. The Hawks drop to 11-7 in conference
outings and continue league play Tuesday against Unity Christian.
