It was a tale of two halfs in Milford on Friday night as Western Christian
won a 20-6 district contest against Okoboji. The Wolfpack took advantage of
Okoboji turnovers and good field position to build a 20-0 lead at halftime.
Junior running back Drew Van Sloten had touchdown runs of three yards, four
yards, and 13 yards for Western Christian, all in the first half. He rushed for
106 yards on 27 carries overall. Through the air, Western Christian had 111
yards total with 56 of those coming from junior Jefferey Granstra. Okoboji
started the second half with senior Weston Bergeson intercepting a pass and
returning it to the Wolfpack 31 yard line. Two plays later Bergeson caught a 16
yard touchdown pass to give the Pioneers their lone score. Western Christian did
fumble the kickoff back to Okoboji at their own 23 yard line but the Pioneers
were unable to answer. The Pioneers had some success through the air in the
second half, gaining 99 yards. Senior Keaton Jones caught four passes for 65
yards to lead the way. Western Christian improves to 4-4 (4-1 district) while
Okoboji falls to 0-8 (0-5 district). Next week the Wolfpack hosts South O’Brien
for the number two spot in Class 1A, District 1 and a home playoff game. Okoboji
travels to North Union.
